Best Online Casinos - Greece
In Greece, online casinos were an unregulated territory for the longest time. Not only was there a lack of definitions for this activity in the official legal documents, but the process of issuing licenses for the operators to provide online gambling services within the country was long and expensive. It also made it complex for foreign businesses to apply. All these complications were paralleled with the growing interest of the local players in the online content. In recent years, online gambling accounted for €8.5b (53.3%) of the total market turnover. At the same time, the European Union started pressuring Greece to make the local market friendlier to everyone interested in offering games of chance in the virtual lobbies. So, in 2020, the state accepted amendments that turned Greece into an attractive environment for the online operators to work at. Here are some of many questions we will be answering in this publication:
- Which Greece online casinos are legit, and how many of them are currently available?
- Are there any Greece online casino free bonuses or other recommended promotions?
- Do Greece-friendly online casinos offer live dealer services to players from the country?
- Which are some of the most popular Greece online gambling machines?
We will also take a closer look at international and country-based operators and their lists of games and promotions and will provide some hints about how to choose a trustworthy gaming website.

Legal Status for Greek Players and Casinos
The rule of thumb for Greece is that the land-based casinos can offer their services, but any gambling outside these regulated venues is prohibited. This regulation comes from the Gambling Act and is monitored by the Greece Gambling Commission, known in the country as the Hellenic Gambling Commission. It consists of the nine members appointed by the Minister of Finances.
Under these regulations, less than twenty brick-and-mortar gaming venues operate in the country. Most of them are located on the islands. These local businesses may also apply for online operations, but they need to have statements proving their financial stability (starting at a minimum of 200,000 Euros), pay a hefty fee for the license, and be able to renew it every seven years. Yearly taxes are added to the cost of going live online, too.
With an already limited number of land-based venues, you can probably guess that the online selection of the best Greece online casinos (aka καλύτερα ελληνικά online καζίνο) is not too big, either.
On the other hand, regulations are a bit more lenient towards sports betting and lotteries. These are all managed by OPAP – the Greek Organization of Football Promotions established in Athens more than half a century ago. It went publicly traded at the beginning of the 2000s, but still responds to the state, and remains a monopoly.
What about the online casinos?
Online gambling remained an industry targeted at tourists for the longest time. In 2011, the country passed a Gambling Act, which was an uncertain invitation for the international operators to participate. But with a yearly tax of 30%, the offer was not all that tempting, and only a couple of internationally recognized brands, including Betfair and William Hill, received the certificates.
Because the definitions in any of the legal documents in Greece are vague when it comes to online gaming, local players can also play in many international lobbies. There are no penalties for this, and the local ISPs won’t block the access. The only concern then remains to pick a properly licensed and trustworthy online operator.
Our database has more than 480 websites friendly to the Greek players, and out of them, more than 50 are targeted (which means that they have content in a local language or are compatible with the specific payment methods). The list of recommendations includes, among others, 888 Casino, Blackjack Ballroom, and Casino Action.
Also, as of 2020, responding to the advice of the EU, Greece implements a new two-tier registration process for the international providers, which should make the registration process easier on them. Every online operator specializing in Sportsbook must pay 3 million Euros for a license. Every brand keen on providing games, poker, and bingo, needs to pay 2 million Euros for a license.

Banking in Greece
The good news is that Euros are probably the most popular currency for most of the modern online lobbies, and in our database, it is available in 80% of the cashiers. This amounts to 380+ websites, including Cocoa Casino and Paradise 8. Alternatively, you may also consider wagering in digital currencies, which are becoming more and more universally used.
Cards and e-wallets remain among the recommended payment methods, with Visa and MasterCard available in hundreds of our lobbies including Casino Kingdom, and Skrill being the most famous e-wallet. Among others, it is added to the cashier of Da Vinci’s Gold.
The major advantage of these methods is low fees and fast withdrawals, as well as compliance with the local banks.
Popular Greek Games
The list of the most popular content providers for Greece is topped by Microgaming, Playtech, Net Entertainment, and NYX. Each of these slot developers has huge collections of Greek-themed games, which are obviously a trend among the players from this country.
When it comes to the table games, poker, blackjack, and roulette lead the charts, and these are represented by both live and non-live versions among many studios that can deliver content to the reviewed market.
In American Roulette, there are 38 black and red slots that are numbered as 1-36, one zero, and a double zero, both of which are colored green
Bingo is a game of chance played with different randomly drawn numbers which the player matches against numbers on his 5×5 card.

Best Greek Bonus Offer
For the best bonus welcome offer for Greece, check out Interwetten. Its proposition covers the initial deposit with a 100% cash match that comes with very manageable wagering requirements. New Online Casinos in Greece
While it may take a while for the Greek land-based venues to win in the state tenders and to open their virtual lobbies, the new regulations of 2020 mean that a flood of international venues is coming into the country’s market. From the players’ perspective, this leads to more online operators opening on a regular basis, as well as to a better diversity on the market.
