The UK Gambling Commission has initiated a new consultation aimed at enhancing player safety and fairness within the British gambling sector. This marks the third consultation undertaken by the Commission to implement the recommendations outlined in the 2023 Gambling Act Review White Paper, "High Stakes: gambling reform for the digital age."

The 16-week consultation, which will run from January 29, 2025, to May 20, 2025, focuses on the revision of gaming machine technical standards and the associated testing strategy.

The proposed changes aim to:

Introduce five new standards: These standards will encompass a range of measures designed promote safer gambling and to empower players in the UK. Key proposals include:

Enhanced time and monetary limit setting functionalities. Clearer and more prominent display of crucial information such as net position and session time.

Improved provision of safer gambling messaging throughout the player journey.

Amend three existing standards: This will involve incorporating industry feedback to enhance player enjoyment and gameplay while maintaining a responsible gaming environment.

Consolidate existing standards: The current 12 gaming machine technical standards will be consolidated into a single, more comprehensive standard, aligning with the format of the Remote Gambling and Software Technical Standards for improved clarity and consistency.

Update and modernize the existing standards: The consultation will address outdated material within the current standards and ensure that the testing strategy remains relevant and effective.

Tim Miller, Gambling Commission Executive Director for Research and Policy, emphasized the importance of these proposed changes: "The White Paper unequivocally prioritizes the safe and responsible conduct of gambling activities. This consultation outlines our approach to implementing these crucial changes within the land-based gaming sector."

Miller further acknowledged the potential impact of these changes on the industry: "We understand that regulatory changes can have significant implications for businesses.

Therefore, we encourage all stakeholders, including consumers, gambling businesses, and other interested parties, to actively participate in this consultation by providing evidence that will assist us in assessing the potential costs and benefits of these proposed changes. This feedback will be instrumental in ensuring that the final regulations strike the right balance between player protection and industry viability."

This consultation represents a crucial step towards creating a safer and more responsible gambling environment in the UK. The Gambling Commission welcomes the input of all stakeholders as it strives to implement the recommendations of the 2023 Gambling Act Review White Paper.
