GamCare Reports Record Demand for Support as Gambling Harms Rises
The report highlights the continued dedication of GamCare to supporting those at risk or experiencing gambling harm, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the gambling harms treatment sector following the government's white paper on gambling reform.
Of the calls and online chats received by the Helpline, 41,070 (74%) were categorized as supportive interventions. These interventions encompassed a range of services, including providing initial guidance and advice, facilitating seamless entry into structured treatment programs, and offering crucial support to individuals seeking to overcome gambling-related distress and financial hardship.
The Office for Health Improvement and Disparities' assessment of the gambling treatment system further emphasizes the critical role of the National Gambling Helpline. The report revealed that 57% of individuals engaging in treatment were referred by the Helpline, highlighting its crucial role in connecting people with the support they urgently need. In the year to April 2024, over 9,100 free treatment sessions were delivered, with an average wait time of just 2.1 days from point of referral.
GamCare's commitment extends beyond direct support services. The charity's targeted programs, aimed at young people, women, and individuals within the criminal justice system, play a vital role in raising awareness and promoting early intervention. In the past year, these programs provided training on identifying and addressing gambling harms to over 10,344 professionals and delivered educational resources to 53,324 young people, children, and parents. The Women's Program, conducted in partnership with organizations such as Refuge, trained 3,813 professionals to recognize and address gambling-related harm among women.
Margot Daly, Executive Chair of GamCare's Board, expressed her gratitude to the dedicated staff and volunteers who consistently provide crucial support to those in need: "Throughout a challenging year and with heightened demand for our services, GamCare's staff have remained steadfast in their commitment to preventing harm and providing vital treatment. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the gambling harms landscape, we have remained resolute in our focus on supporting those affected by gambling harm."
Daly further acknowledged the invaluable contributions of the senior executive team, the Board of Trustees, and all stakeholders who have tirelessly worked to ensure GamCare continues to fulfill its mission.
Looking ahead, GamCare remains committed to working collaboratively with the NHS, other partners, and commissioners to ensure that individuals experiencing gambling-related harm continue to receive timely and effective support.
