The Dutch mental health service is leading the charge for a complete ban on online gambling advertisements in the Netherlands gaming field. Despite existing regulations prohibiting untargeted ads and the use of role models, a recent investigation by KRO-NCRV’s Pointer revealed that illegal gambling companies and sports tipster platforms continue to target young people through social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat.
These entities employ tactics such as using influencers and enticing phrases like "free money" to lure a younger demographic, lowering the barrier to entry into the world of gambling. This trend is concerning, as it affects both licensed and unlicensed online casinos operating in the Netherlands. The Dutch Gaming Authority has initiated an investigation based on Pointer's findings.
Ruth Peetoom, chair of the Dutch mental health service, drew parallels between the gambling industry's targeting of young people and the tactics used by the tobacco industry. Both industries utilize similar marketing strategies to entice young individuals with promises of fast money and the influence of role models.
Despite the existing advertising restrictions, gambling companies continue to test the boundaries of the law. To address this issue, the Dutch mental health and addiction care associations are advocating for a total ban on online gambling ads and stricter regulations for gambling providers' duty of care.
By implementing a complete ban, the Dutch mental health care sector aims to prevent the normalization of gambling behavior among young people and safeguard them from the potential risks and consequences associated with online gambling.
