Changes to Self-Exclusion for Danish Gamblers: Player ID and Betting in Physical Stores

#BettingLegislation  #GambleLike_Denmark

Agreed in November 2019 by government and political figures, the introduction of Player ID in physical betting has already taken effect. Therefore, all new players willing to enjoy a sportsbook in kiosks and shops will have to follow the new rules and provide their player ID. Let’s take a closer look at how it works and why it was introduced in the first place.

PLAYER ID AND WHAT IT CHANGES

Danish Gambling Authority Spillemyndigheden has stated that from October 1st, bettors who prefer physical stores for betting will have to indicate their player ID before placing any stakes. This new rule is applied to every new player who has created his or her personal account on October 1st or after. All accounts created before will not be affected by this new change in betting legislation for Danish players.

The extension of Player ID to physical stores also means that ROFUS, a self-exclusion platform available for players from Denmark, will work for betting in kiosks and shops. Therefore, any player who will register with ROFUS or renew his/her registration in the system after October 1st will be self-excluded from:

  • Gambling at online operators with Danish license.
  • Land-based casinos in the country.
  • Kiosks and betting shops that offer sportsbook services.
  • Advertising from gambling destinations in Denmark.

Please note that those who have registered with ROFUS and have not renewed their registration after the new rule took effect will still be able to place bets at physical betting destinations. They will not be self-excluded from kiosks and betting shops.

REASONS FOR PLAYER ID IMPLEMENTATION

There are several reasons why the Danish government has decided to implement the mandatory Player ID for physical betting destinations.

One of them is the enhancement of customer protection, as players with harmful gambling behaviors are now able to have self-exclusion from the last major betting destination that has been available for them when online and land-based casinos were blocked. This will also allow the government to prevent minors from gambling activities.

Another reason was to prevent money laundering, as the usage of Player ID will make it easier to track who and what bets make. Mandatory Player ID should also decrease match-fixing, so betting services in the country should become fairer.

The government in the UK has also introduced new measures to withhold minors from gambling, namely new advertising rules were introduced in the country for casino and betting operators.
