Australia has implemented a long-awaited ban on credit card use for online gambling platforms. This measure, actively supported by Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA) since 2021, aims to promote responsible gambling by limiting credit access for online wagers.
Protecting Players Through Responsible Practices
RWA CEO Kai Cantwell applauds the ban, emphasizing its importance in safeguarding consumers. "This is an important measure to protect customers, making it easier for people to stay in control of their own gambling behaviour" he stated. He explained how the ban empowers players to gamble responsibly, ensuring they only wager with available funds.
Complementary Tools and Call for Consistency
While the ban targets online gambling, RWA advocates for its extension to all gambling forms. Mr. Cantwell highlights a key concern: "If consumer protection measures aren’t consistent across all forms of gambling it will incentivise vulnerable Australians to move to less-regulated types of gambling, where they are more at risk of harm."
RWA: A Champion for Safe Gambling Environments
RWA members are actively involved in promoting responsible gambling habits. They provide various tools, many of which have been incorporated into the National Consumer Protection Framework (NCPF) by the government. With an upcoming NCPF evaluation, RWA expresses its commitment to participate actively. "RWA and its members support the extension of this measure to all forms of gambling that have been exempted from the ban such as lotteries and keno." says Mr. Cantwell
This news signifies Australia's proactive approach to tackling problem gambling. The credit card ban, coupled with RWA's ongoing efforts, represents a significant step towards fostering responsible gambling practices and a safer environment for all.
