The Lithuanian government follows the trend of recent years and plans to impose a ban on gambling advertising soon. This type of restriction has already been implemented in a range of European countries, but not all the countries have the support of society in this aspect. That is not the case with Lithuania, and the recent survey conducted in the country shows that the ban is supported by 80% of the respondents.

The survey held by the public broadcaster LRT in cooperation with the market research company Baltijos tyrimai in March 2024 reveals that the majority of Lithuanians approve the upcoming ban on gambling advertising that should take effect by January 1st, 2025.

Given that the upcoming restrictions are accepted by society quite well, the chances that the ban can be canceled or postponed are quite low.

Nonetheless answers differed by the category of respondents. Thus, those who have higher than secondary education, women, those aged 50+, and those with the household income of 1,100 EUR or above showed higher support of the ban:

  • Women / man – 86% / 72%
  • Those aged over 50 – 84%
  • Those with high household income and higher education – 85%.

At the same time, those categories of respondents who were against the advertising ban included:

  • Men – 21%
  • People under 30 – 23%
  • Those who live in rural areas – 18%
  • Those with unfinished secondary education – 30%.

Overall, 1115 adults were questioned.

Currently, the parliament works actively on the amendments to the law to ensure that a ban on gambling advertising will be implemented timely.

GAMBLING RESTRICTIONS IN OTHER COUNTRIES

A ban on gambling advertising is also popular in other European countries. Thus, the United Kingdom has recently introduced it for casinos and sportsbooks. The Bulgarian government has plans to implement it in the future. However, it is currently under review.

At the same time, Australia continues to implement new restrictions and rules to make gambling more responsible. It has recently added new rules about how wagering activity should be presented to customers of online operators. Those rules have already taken effect in Victoria.
